Resources
We have developed resources -
- for all key stages (1-4)
- for parents, and
- for other adult groups
14-19 Curriculum
We are working with Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership to develop RSE inputs to be delivered by Fire and Rescue Service staff to students in schools and colleges.
The approach is largely based upon the Goals for Driver Education, a model that identifies and describes the four levels required of a skilled driver: from
- basic control skills,
- through the mastery of traffic situations,
- to trip-related factors that can influencing performance,
- to the over-arching personal characteristics and competencies that influence all other skills.
In particular, we are concentrating on Level 4, dealing with personal values and norms, lifestyles and peer group norms.
Community Life 3 and 4
We developed two resources for Citizenship at Key Stages
3 and 4.
They were designed to encourage students to take a greater role in
determining the direction of transport policies within a local
authority. Along with teachers’ notes and worksheets, the pack also
included a CD-ROM with background information on a range of issues that
affect transport policy.
Developed for Buckinghamshire County Council.
All About Packs
Essex County Council produces and distributes specifically targeted road safety packs for parents and children at key stages of children's lives.
We worked with them to develop a pack for 14 year-olds and their parents.
It consisted of an A5 booklet for students, giving them information on such issues as personal safety whilst out and about and the effects of drugs and alcohol and an A4 advice booklet for parents about how they can help their children with problems that they might face on the road.
Teachers' notes are available for schools that wish to use the packs in PHSE or tutor times.
Staying Alive
In association with Colin Buchanan and Partners, we researched and developed Staying Alive for the
National Safety Council Dublin.
Designed for Transition Year pupils (15-16 year-olds), its main aims are to -
- explore the wider issues of road usage from both a personal and community perspective
- raise road safety issues within the context of students'personal decision making
- engage students in a consideration of the issues
- promote safer attitudes towards road usage prior to young people starting to learn to drive
Copies of this 145pp ring-bound A4 resource have been provided to all second level schools in Ireland. About two-thirds of these schools provide a formal Transition Year Course.
