Training
We offer training courses for road safety professionals on behalf of both Road Safety GB and the Pan London Road Safety Steering Group. These courses are run jointly with TMS Consultancy. We also run tailor-made short courses for local authority, police and fire and rescue service (FRS) staff.
Phase 2 Training
The National Staff Training Group (NSTG) within Road Safety GB aims to act as a focus for information and knowledge on issues relevant to Road Safety Officer education, training and continuous professional development.
In 2000, the Group tendered out the Road Safety Phase 2 course to TMS Consultancy and RSN Associates. They work closely with us to ensure the course is appropriate and satisfies the needs of Road Safety Managers in delivering a broad Road Safety course. NSTG will continue to operate the Road Safety Phase 2 course in this manner.
This course is designed for new entrants to the profession who have already completed Phase 1 or have 6-12 months on job experience. A limited number of places are also available for police officers or military staff with a road safety responsibility.
Each delegate has opportunities to learn from experienced tutors and discover together how people work in other organisations. Delegates learn through doing rather than listening. The modules consists of a combination of formal listening and practical activities, including discussions, group work and on site work.
Courses are held at the The Swan's Nest Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon. They are normally run once a year. The next course will be held on 8 - 12 October 2012. For further details or to make a booking, contact TMS Consultancy.
Phase 2 Training in London
Until the recent financial cutbacks, a Phase 2 course specifically for London road safety professionals was held annually, usually in early summer.
Organised on behalf of the Pan London Road Safety Steering Group, the four-day course was FREE of CHARGE to all those employed by London Borough Councils, Transport for London, Metropolitan Police and other London Authority Organisations.
The course was modified to reflect London issues and featured a number of speakers from London Boroughs.
One of the key elements of the course was to allow delegates to question and reflect on current practices in a non-threatening atmosphere. That included questioning tutors - who are not there to tell delegates how everything should be done. Delegates were encouraged to assess their own approaches to road safety issues and how improvements can be made. The key approach was to allow delegates to learn through doing as well as listening - but listening to other delegates was equally as important as listening to the tutors.
Delivering road safety in the future
This is a two day residential course aimed at road safety professionals who have already attended a Phase 2 course or who have at least three years experience.
The key aim of the course, run in conjunction with TMS Consultancy, is to explore how best to address the challenges beyond 2010 and identify the opportunities for delivering road safety in the future. Given the current climate, much emphasis is placed upon evidence and evaluation. Delegates are also given the opportunity to share working practices and explore ideas with other road safety professionals.
First run in 2010, the second course was held on 25-26 January 2011. For further details of future courses, contact TMS Consultancy.
Local training
Aside from national and London training, we have run a wide variety of short training courses for local authority staff.
With the increasing involvement of Police Community Safety Officers (PCSOs) and Fire and Rescue Service staff in road safety education, we have seen more demand for training courses for such staff.
We have run several courses throughout Essex for PCSOs and firefighters to assist in the delivery of road safety education, training and publicity. Two two-day and one one-day modules, a total of five days, were developed and delivered. The modules dealt with Meeting the road safety challenge, delievring the message, and working on campaigns.
In Autumn 2010 we worked with the Cambridgeshire Road Safety Partnership to develop and deliver two two-day courses on road safety education to 32 Fire and Rescue staff. The first day was largely concerned with issues such as working with schools, influencing behaviour, how people learn and the goals for driver education. Building upon this background, the second day consisted of ways of developing a successful input and the practical development and presentation of sample inputs.
The courses were highly rated by the delegates. Within weeks, ideas developed by the firefighters themselves on the course had been successfully used in Cambridgeshire schools.
We can work with you to devise a course to fit your needs and arrange inputs from a variety of facilitators to achieve your specific objectives.
